McKenzie had been told that she was an incorrigible, freckled, hothead, and was sent to her Aunt Sally for reform when she was very young. Rather than make her resentful, she learned that living in a tenement building infested with foul smelling people, uncontrolled children and rats, was not all there was in life. Aunt Sally gave her the love and education she was missing with her own parents. That is, until Aunt Sally died and her Uncle’s new wife only wanted her for a maid. Her supervisor at the sewing factory wasn’t much better with his lusting eyes and roving hands. If it weren’t for her hopes and dreams, she would have fallen into the same rut as her mother.
Instead, she took a job as a Harvey Girl and moved west searching for acceptance and a new life.
