The Night Queen : A Historical Dark Fantasy Romance (Romantic Fairy Tales for Adults Book 1)

They call me the Night Queen, with a heart as dark as the night itself. No light shall ever touch my broken heart again. When tragedy strikes young Princess Mina, the devastated girl vows to never love again. Years later, on her twentieth birthday, the beautiful but cold princess stands by her promise. Unwilling to be married off to a warmongering Northerner, she defies her father, the mighty King of the Rhine, and ridicules all her potential suitors. Furious at her behavior, her father vows to give Mina’s hand in marriage to the first unmarried man who walks through the palace gates—be it nobleman or beggar. And when a penniless soldier arrives at the castle the following day to ask for work, the king stands by his word and offers Mina to him. But the princess has plans of her own. She can’t stand the soldier, yet offers him a deal; help her flee in return for riches. Stuck together on a dangerous journey through war-torn lands, Mina and her compelling companion realize that the delicate line between hate and love might be thinner than both are willing to admit… From the author: This is a spicy fairy tale retelling of the long-forgotten German fairy tale King Thrushbeard. It was one of the first stories to use the enemies to lovers and forced marriage romance tropes. The original story was first published for adults by the beloved Brothers Grimm (whose works include such classics as Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Rapunzel). If you’d love to read a dark fantasy romance for adults and enjoy steamy romance books, this is a must-read. This is the FIRST book in a series. The second book, Queen of Ashes, will be released in September and is available here on Amazon. The Night Queen (book I)Queen of Ashes (book II) Read more

Communities of Saint Martin: Legend and Ritual in Medieval Tours

Sharon Farmer here investigates the ways in which three medieval communities—the town of Tours, the basilica of Saint-Martin there, and the abbey of Marmoutier nearby—all defined themselves through the cult of Saint Martin. She demonstrates how in the early Middle Ages the bishops of Tours used the cult of Martin, their fourthcentury predecessor, to shape an idealized image of Tours as Martin’s town. As the heirs to Martin’s see, the bishops projected themselves as the rightful leaders of the community. However, in the late eleventh century, she shows, the canons of Saint-Martin (where the saint’s relics resided) and the monks of Marmoutier (which Martin had founded) took control of the cult and produced new legends and rituals to strengthen their corporate interests. Since the basilica and the abbey differed in their spiritualities, structures, and external ties, the canons and monks elaborated and manipulated Martin’s cult in quite different ways. Farmer shows how one saint’s cult lent itself to these varying uses, and analyzes the strikingly dissimilar Martins that emerged. Her skillful inquiry into the relationship between group identity and cultural expression illuminates the degree to which culture is contested territory. Farmer’s rich blend of social history and hagiography will appeal to a wide range of medievalists, cultural anthropologists, religious historians, and urban historians. Read more
