Baldwin and Bronwyn serve side by side at Greenway Court, the Virginia plantation of Lord Thomas Fairfax and his nephew, Thomas “Bryan” Martin. Bronwyn tends the household while Baldwin works the tobacco fields, and it is here—on the brink of revolution—that George Washington visits his old friends and first encounters the young couple whose lives are about to change forever.
Their love leads them to marry in secret, defying the rules placed upon servants. But when war erupts between the colonies and England, Baldwin must choose his allegiance: the British homeland that cast him out or the Patriots of the new world he’s come to call home. Forced into one side and later captured as a prisoner of war, his fate takes a dramatic turn he never anticipated.
Meanwhile, Bronwyn guards a dangerous secret while managing the household and receiving visitors from both sides of the conflict. When that secret is exposed, she is banished from the plantation—left to wonder if Baldwin will ever find her again, or if the war will keep them apart for good.
