The only love Sarah had from age 2 was from her bachelor Uncle Ethan. After 15 years, her parents indicate that they are ready to take control of her life. Marrying her off to someone that will benefit them financially strikes fear in the hearts of Uncle Ethan and Sarah. She and Uncle Ethan (who she calls Poppie) decide that a trip to Europe would help her avoid ‘the parents’. Rather than sail for Europe, Sarah secretly takes her maid on a train west to visit her ex-governess Emily and her husband Edward. Sarah returns to Boston to find Poppie at the docks looking for her among the survivors of a ship lost at sea on its return from Europe.
