Book One: LucasA look inside the pages:“Hey, you two!”
Starting to panic, Collin loses his footing and gets more stuck on the fence.
I pull my jacket hood up so the cop can’t see my face. “Just jump!” I tell Collin.
Letting go of the fence, Collin wriggles out of his snagged shirt and lands feet first on the ground.
“Get back here!” the cop yells, starting to climb the fence to come after us.
I grab Collin’s hand to make sure we don’t get separated, and we take off running.
Kicking over a stack of clay pots, we bolt through the old rows of empty seed trays and disassembled greenhouses. The sound of breaking pots and pounding footsteps make me feel like the cop is right on our tail.
“There’s going to be another fence!” Collin pants, still clutching tightly to my hand.
“Then climb fast, okay?” I say, pulling him towards an overturned planting bench he can use as a step.
Running on adrenaline, I practically toss him up and over the fence. He tumbles down the other side, jumping back up as I clamber up behind him. I let go of the top of the fence just as the cop rushes up.
