The emotional rollercoaster of Pride and Prejudice retold in a lighter, easy-to-read, literary style.
A chance to delve below Mr Darcy’s aloof exterior and discover the man beneath.
What if a male child had been born to the Bennets? What if the Longbourn estate could be saved and would not be lost to the immediate family on Mr Bennet’s death? When such a rumour emerges, who is to investigate it?
Fitzwilliam Darcy is already bewitched by Elizabeth Bennet and considers that he would be in some danger, were it not for the inferiority of her connections. The lost-boy story is therefore the ideal pretext for him to retain some contact with Elizabeth without having to pay court to her, even after the Netherfield party quit Hertfordshire for London, seemingly permanently.
Bingley, too, is keen to investigate the story which could take some unravelling. Can the boy be found and the story proved?
Elizabeth, however, is predisposed to dislike Darcy and be suspicious of him, not least due to his having famously insulted her at their very first encounter, coupled with her firm conviction that Darcy planned the exodus from Netherfield to remove Bingley from Jane, her beloved sister, and prevent their marriage.
Poor Jane Bennet, seemingly abandoned, is left to speculate that Bingley may have taken a mistress to occupy himself.
But as autumn and winter turn to spring, then summer, regrettable events accumulate, affecting the Bennets’ lives and prospects. Indeed, the situation worsens after Lydia visits Brighton, though not quite for the reason you might suspect! But her misadventure threatens to prevent the Bennets attending a house party at Pemberley, which would have offered some relief. Even Georgiana Darcy’s strong friendship with Elizabeth formed at Rosings cannot assist.
