A wealthy San Francisco investor named Caldwell arrives with plans to consolidate all independent silver operations in the basin under one corporate entity — and the legal muscle to make refusal costly. Simultaneously, an unusual death at the mine raises questions Ellie cannot ignore, Winnemucca’s community faces a new federal threat to their remaining land, and the question of what Ellie and Cormac are to each other — now that the emergency is over and ordinary life has begun — proves harder to answer than any legal dispute.
