YOU BUILT A JAR AND CALLED IT A WORLD There is something deeply ambitious about taking a piece of Earth, placing it inside glass, sealing it, and then expecting it to behave. It is, in many ways, the smallest possible version of the largest possible idea: that systems can be understood, contained, and—if you are feeling particularly confident—controlled. You will not control it. You will, however, arrange some dirt, introduce some plants, possibly add decorative rocks that serve no biological purpose whatsoever, and then stand back with the quiet satisfaction of someone who believes they have created balance. And for a brief, glorious period—often measured in days—you may even be correct. Then the system begins.
