A young Puerto Rican musician trying to find his place in New York’s jazz world appears to have committed suicide by jumping overboard from the Staten Island ferry. It makes no sense to everyone who knew him. Police discover that he was expertly murdered and jettisoned into New York Harbor just before the ferry arrived in Manhattan. In the meantime, his beautiful girlfriend, from the Dominican Republic via Haiti, survives a fusillade of bullets fired from the street in front of her Harlem tenement. The two cases have to be linked, police think, but how? In time, they hear rumors that the dead musician owed a drug debt but there is no evidence to suggest he was even a drug user. Because he’s so prominent in the Bronx underworld, an obese figure known as El Gordo, the fat man, is suspected of being behind the killing and the threats to the dead man’s lover. But still, there’s no proof. Was the long-disbanded Murder Inc. organization in Brooklyn involved? With evidence from a dying friend of Humph’s, a former detective in the Bronx, possibilities emerge—ones that even explain the beautiful girlfriend’s years of hauling money for drugs to Montreal. The truth was a long time coming.
