For sixteen-year-old Kota Franklin, summer break has been nothing short of miserable. But the icing on the cake had to be getting hauled to literally the other side of the planet by his mom, Miko, to help clean up her childhood home; an old Shinto Shrine on the outskirts of Kyoto, Japan, ran by his curmudgeon of a grandpa, Gyo.
If polishing floors and sweeping mountains’ worth of steps weren’t enough, now Kota’s having visions again, like swarms of paper tags dive-bombing his head, and a masked psycho coming out of the toilet…only this one’s real! And it’s got his mom!
Sucked into a world of unfamiliar gods and monsters, Kota finds himself a captive in the hellish fortress prison Jigoku, headed by the terrifying bull-faced warden, Gozu. To escape, Kota must team up with the savage weasel spirit, Hiroto, and the dangerously alluring fox princess, Chiaki, each with powers and secrets that could derail Kota’s chances of saving his mom from the clutches of an enormous toad lord in the heart of Heaven’s capital; Kyoto, the seat of the gods.
How far can Kota trust his new companions or himself as the three attempt to infiltrate the most impregnable city on either side of reality?
