Caroline knows there’s something wrong with the woman she and her husband Travis hired to babysit their eight-year-old daughter. She can feel the danger lurking behind the woman’s eyes. She can feel it in the touch of the woman’s handshake. Caroline knows she shouldn’t leave her daughter alone with this woman. She knows something catastrophic will happen if she does. But she can’t make Travis believe it. She’s sick, Travis reminds her, paranoid, delusional. There’s nothing wrong with the babysitter. There’s nothing to be afraid of. Then the call comes when Caroline and Travis are out to dinner. The house is on fire, and Caroline and Travis race home to face the horrifying truth. Their daughter is dead, and the babysitter has disappeared.
After losing everything, Caroline has a breakdown and is committed to a psychiatric hospital. But there’s something not quite right about this hospital. There are no clocks, no windows, and the patients are not allowed to go outside. There’s the nurse who torments her. There’s the elderly patient who tells her that this hospital is no hospital at all but a top-secret military installation and that Caroline and all the other patients are being trained as psychic assassins for the government. Caroline doesn’t believe it—or she doesn’t want to believe it. But what about the premonition that something catastrophic would happen if she left her daughter alone with the babysitter? And what about the visions?
Night after night, when the lights are out, Caroline sees her in the darkness, the woman who killed her daughter, mocking Caroline, mocking her pain. Caroline doesn’t know if she has a gift or if the visions are a product of her illness, but she does know that the woman who killed her daughter is out there somewhere. And she knows what she’s going to do. She’s going to escape from the hospital and find her. She’s going to kill her. And she’s going to kill anyone who gets in her way.
