Amanda Lester and the Pink Sugar Conspiracy (Amanda Lester, Detective Book 1)

Twelve-year-old Amanda Lester wouldn’t be caught dead going into the family business. Just because she’s related to Inspector G. Lestrade, that bumbler who sometimes worked with master sleuth Sherlock Holmes, doesn’t mean she should become a detective and give up her dream of becoming a filmmaker. Unfortunately, her plans are in jeopardy. Her latest project with the Stick Dog Filmmakers Club and Production Company isn’t coming together, and her control freak tendencies have driven away all her actors. If she doesn’t make a winning film soon, her parents will insist that she go into the L.A.P.D. young cadets training program, and her budding career will be over. So when Herb and Lila Lester suddenly send her to a secret English school for the descendants of famous detectives, Amanda resists—until she and her new friends notice drops of blood and weird pink substances in odd places. Are these strange happenings clues to a real mystery or simply part of the elaborate class project the teachers assign every year? The answer comes all too soon. When Amanda’s father disappears and the school’s cook is found dead with her head in a bag of sugar, the kids are certain that crimes are taking place. Now Amanda must embrace her destiny and uncover the truth. The only snag is that arch-villain Blixus Moriarty, a descendant of Holmes’s nemesis Professor James Moriarty, might be involved, and he doesn’t like nosy little girls interfering in his business. Code of Rainbow: Soaring Flame and the Dragon-transcending Magimal (Book 1)

This is the first book of a teen fantasy book series that nurtures the bloom of MAGIC in the soil of SCIENCE. The magic in this world is different from the “traditional” concept, because it’s backed up by realistic, physical scientific theories. As the story goes on, you’ll enjoy the unique charm of science and magic merging into each other – something that has rarely been attempted before. The transition from magic to science will be bit by bit, so the early books do read like a “mainstream” magic fantasy. Soarame has a pair of special eyes. He can see magic elements in this world, which are supposed to be invisible. This enviable gift of his could reveal the truth of the world, but it also puts him in danger. Many animals in this world possess magic power, so they are called “magimals” – dragons as examples. Soarame fortunately got a baby magimal as his best friend, but they got into troubles together – troubles that were a lot bigger than dragons. Could they survive? Read more

The Smile: A story about an Inuit girl, her parents, her dog, and her necklace

In a land where there is six months night and six months day, where the wind rarely rests, and food is scarce, a girl and her family struggle to survive. When mother and father leave to find food, Ahnah and her favourite dog, Akiak, must endure on their own, but by following a dream, they may bring a smile to more than one face. THE SMILE will be a permafree book – forever. Why you may ask? Here is the story. As a creative person, I am an adamant defender of our freedom of expression. Over the last few years, I have noticed that in the quasi-democratic world, institutions, media outlets, schools, and universities ban books, therefore, ban ideas. Governments are even worse – they send the wrong message and try to criminalize speech and even thought. When I finished writing THE SMILE, I sent the manuscript to a linguist – a university professor. I was looking for help and searching for a well-experienced editor of Inuit origin. I wanted to be sure my story, although simple, was well-grounded and correctly depicted the Inuit lifestyle. Here is her reply (typos included): “Dear Mr. Darmonkow – My position, and that of people who work with Indigenous cultures, is that no one has the right to tell or make up a story about these cultures without strong and definite endorsement from the Indigenous people themselves. The Indigneous people themselves are the ones to tell the stories, but may also support writers from other cultures who have spend the very long time necessary to understand the Innu or Inuit culture. The issue is ‘cultural and voice appropriation,’ you can Google it.” To be honest, her answer bothered me. A lot. Not because it was related to my humble story but because, to me, it is wrong by default. Cultural and voice appropriation means that Homer, regarded as an enemy of homosexuality had no right to create the gay protagonists Achilles and Patroclus; that Shakespeare, a white man, had no right to create Othello; that Tolstoy, a male author, had no right to sculpt the character of Anna Karenina; and that “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” which outsold the Bible when it was published, had no right to exist because the author was not only a woman, but a white female. The literary world is full of similar “inappropriate” examples. In addition to the above, the idea of the book is mine, it is not stolen from a myth or a folktale. I created the book to add value to a culture that I do not belong to, but I rather admire. “Freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression,” anyone? Hope you enjoy my little book – it is not banned yet. Read more
