Housing and Social Policy: Contemporary Themes and Critical Perspectives
This topical book transforms the analysis of housing problems into a lively, interesting and contentious subject of social scientific study, addressing themes of residential experience, inclusion/empowerment, sustainability and professionalism/managerialism, which lie at the heart of the housing and social policy debate. Each chapter considers a specific social category – such as class, gender, or disability – and evaluates the experience and understanding of housing and social policy under this category. With innovative approaches to conceptualising housing and a clear, defined structure, Housing and Social Policy encourages students and practitioners in both arenas to think reflexively about housing as a central instrument of social policy and social experience.$0.00$2.99 -

Woodworking: Woodworking Guide for Beginner’s With Step-by-step Instructions : Woodworking
Woodworking Guide for Beginner’s Complete Woodworking Guide for Beginner’s With Step-by-Step Instructions (BONUS – 16,000 Woodworking Plans and Projects) I found my way into fine woodworking shortly after graduating college, in 2003. I took a 2 week introduction to the fundamentals of fine woodworking at Boston’s North Bennet Street School. From there, I spent 3 years working at woodworking specialty retail stores, went to North Bennet full time for 2 more years, and set up shop as a custom furniture maker, which lasted for just over 7 years. Woodworking, on many levels, is an ongoing process of reduction and refinement: Big trees into big boards, into smaller boards, into smaller pieces. Grinding cutting tools, and then honing, and polishing the edges. Rough shaping, scraping and filing of wood, followed by coarse sanding, and on into finer grits. And, the progression of learning the rough basics, and the ongoing refining what you know, and what you can do. The purpose of this book is to provide a coarse introduction to getting into the hobby. I assume that you’ll seek out other sources of information as the need arises. Woodworking as a craft spans thousands of years, and I couldn’t hope to cover all that ground. Books have been published on the topic for centuries. Taunton Press started printing Fine Wood Working 40 years ago, and many other magazines have since come and gone, or showed up and stayed. And the internet, bless its tainted soul, has been ranting and raving at an exponential rate about just about anything for over 20 years. Information overload is a real risk, especially on the internet, and I can’t stress enough that it’s something to be careful of. But in the end, any real learning that occurs will happen at the bench, as you feel for yourself how your tools are working. You’ll understand more as you see how the project comes together. You’ll get better at visualizing objects, and processes, in three dimensions, as you make the things with your own hands. The printed word can only convey so much, and it doesn’t hold a candle to what your own two hands will tell you. Urban Design Futures
The last decade has seen the rise of urban design which has taken a central position in the new agendas for urban regeneration and renaissance. Urban design has moved from marginality to mainstream. The principles espoused by urban designers over the past thirty years are now accepted as key to a better urban environment and as we move towards greater sustainability, different ideas are emerging that are challenging some of the accepted urban design norms; urban design is at a watershed. Urban Design Futures presents essays from an international cast of authors to review progress and explore emerging ideas: should urban design reflect the future rather than recreate the past? What are the new driving forces that will shape urban living and hence urban design in the future? This book explores new concepts and points the way towards a series of urban design paradigms for the twenty-first century.$0.00$7.99 -

Housing and Social Transition in Japan
Bringing together a number of perspectives on the Japanese housing system, Housing and Social Transition in Japan provides a comprehensive, challenging and theoretically developed account of the dynamic role of the housing system during a period of unprecedented social and economic change in one of the most enigmatic social, political, and economic systems of the modern world. While Japan demonstrates many of the characteristics of some western housing and social systems, including mass homeownership and consumption-based lifestyles, extensive economic growth and rapid urban modernization has been achieved in balance with traditional social values and the maintenance of the family system. Helpfully divided into three sections, Housing and Social Transition in Japan: explores the dynamics of the development of the housing system in post-war Japan deals with social issues related to housing in terms of social aging, family relations, gender and inequality addresses the Japanese housing system and social change in relation to comparative and theoretical frameworks. As well as providing challenges and insights for the academic community at large, this book also provides a good introduction to the study of Japan and its housing, economic, social and welfare system generally.$0.00$9.99 -

Almost Organic: Green Gardening Tips for the Practical Gardener
Almost Organic: Green Gardening Tips for the Practical Gardener Let me help you take the frustration out of gardening and landscaping. Discover methods to be kind to the environment by being "almost organic", and maintaining a great looking yard and garden while being environmentally responsible, yet practical. If you find you’re spending more time on your lawn and garden with less to show for it, then you’ll benefit from the advice in this book, as it outlines methods that are preferably organic, at times traditional, but always after exploring the more green alternatives. Written in an easy to follow format by a lifelong gardener, who’s passion for gardening and our environment shows, this book includes common sense tips for: having a good-looking lawn with minimal upkeep, using nontoxic methods keeping insects away with little or no insecticide use how to reduce your herbicide use without being overrun by weeds when to renew and when to redo understanding the numbers on the fertilizer bag and more In this book you’ll find a happy middle ground between the purist organic approach and the overuse of fertilizers, and pesticides, recycling awareness and more. Give yourself the freedom to sit back and enjoy your lawn and garden with this "less is more" approach. From the Author I admit I’ve always been just a little skeptical of "green gardening practices", but have always adhered to the "natural" way when possible. Thankfully, over the years many of us have become a lot smarter in the way we look at what we’re feeding ourselves and putting on our lawns. I’ve found great success in my gardening efforts by questioning some of the old methods, evaluating some of the new, and then finding a mixture of the best of each asbeing the way to go. I’m really just a guy who enjoys some of the simple things in life, one of them being gardening, and I’d like to share some of the learning, experiences, and opinions I have picked up over the years. I’ve found that over time, different experiences have changed some of those opinions, and I’m certainly not afraid of adapting my thinking or my actions when they make sense to me. I’ve had my eyes opened somewhat by my organic friends, it’s my hope this book will help you decide what path you’re on! . Another in the "Gardening with Don" Series$0.00$0.99 -
