The Dearth of Conversions: Awakening the Church to a Great Need [Updated and Annotated]

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. – 1 John 1:9 When a physician takes charge of a patient, the first thing he seeks to know is the nature and extent of the evil he must deal with. That is why he spends so much time and thought on the careful observation of the symptoms. The success of the treatment depends entirely on the accuracy of the diagnosis. Even so, in dealing with the great question of the lack of conversions in the church of Christ, it is not enough that we acknowledge the truth of what is said, or actively set out to specify what we think is the best way to bring about a change. If the church is to fully realize what is wrong with her condition, and if it is to find the path in which God alone can lead her out of it, then believers and ministers must be brought low before the Lord and seek Him, the Great Physician, to reveal and remove the sin and restore that conversion power that comes from Him alone. Let us, then, in the spirit of humbling ourselves before God, and in dependence upon the Holy Spirit, ask God to show us what the allegation implies – that the church of Christ is losing the power of conversion, of bringing sinners to the Savior. List of Chapters The Evil What the Evil Means The Cause The Cure About the AuthorAndrew Murray (1828-1917) was a well-known South African writer, teacher, and pastor. U Turn to God: Destiny of the Soul

Is it God’s will for us to just accept death as a given and ask no further questions? Are we to be left dangling in the dark about these things; left to subsist in the ever-present fear of such unannounced uncertainty – to take death as it comes without so much as batting an eyelid? Or could the opposite be true? Could God’s intent actually be for the whole human family to acknowledge death in its proper light – for us all to arrive at a point where we fully understand that which we need to, and are completely satisfied not to speculate any further as to what lays beyond it? For surely this is the line in the sand every soul needs to come to; a defining point past which there is no reason to step – a time, a place, a state of mind, a spiritual standpoint at which we stop striving and finally find rest in the arms of God’s providence. How to Be Disciplined: The Beginner’s Guide to Discovering How to Manage Time, Become More Productive, Overcome Procrastination, and Focus on the Things That Matter Most in Life

Does it feel like time is always slipping through your fingers? It’s easy to get caught up in the moment. Whether it’s a game on your phone, a new TV-show, or a comic book you bought on a whim, if you’re not careful, these momentary distractions can turn into hours of wasted time. And to think you could have better spent that period being present and productive! The question is, why is it always so hard to focus on the things you need to do? Why is it that even if you know you’re supposed to get something done–no matter how close you are to the deadline, and no matter how far along you’ve come–sometimes, your body just refuses to move? If any of the above situations resonate, what you need most could be a change in your perspective. In this book, you will discover: The definition of discipline, and how to make it work for you How to make effort feel like reward The trick to finding motivation that works Why we procrastinate, and how to overcome it The importance of learning how to manage your time You might be thinking, “Well, that’s just common sense. I don’t need a book to understand all that.” We don’t disagree! But you’d be surprised how easy it is to forgo common sense in favor of that irrational inner voice that keeps calling you a failure. But we know, and you know, that deep inside, that’s not who you are. The truth is, you can climb the mountain, even if it looks high. You can get fit, even if exercise is hard. You can get that degree, even if you’re in your thirties. And you will persevere, even when the going gets tough. This book will tell you how to get things done. The Reformed Pastor: The Duties and Methods of Labors for the Souls of Men [Updated and Annotated]

Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. – Galatians 6:9 The Reformed Pastor, the work of Richard Baxter, has been long known and cherished by ministers of various evangelical denominations as among the most inspiring, sacred, and fervent works ever written on the duties and responsibilities of the pastoral office. Many of them have had their own souls and ministries greatly affected as they read the book, much like they might imagine the burning coal from God’s own altar did regarding the lips of the prophet (Isaiah 6:5-6). Although this book is more directly addressed to pastors, the lessons contained in the book may be applied to all Christians to whom God has given the opportunity and means of influencing others for His kingdom. List of Chapters Part 1 – The Oversight of OurselvesCh. 1: The Nature of This OversightCh. 2: The Motives to the Oversight of Ourselves Part 2 – The Oversight of the FlockCh. 3: The Nature of This OversightCh. 4: The Manner of the Oversight of the FlockCh. 5: The Motives for the Oversight of the Flock Part 3 – ApplicationCh. 6: The Use of Humbling Ourselves Part 4 – The Duty of Personal Catechizing and InstructingCh. 7: Motives to This DutyCh. 8: Objections to This DutyCh. 9: Directions for This Duty About the AuthorRichard Baxter (1615–1691) preached “as a dying man to dying men.” He was devoted to God and was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Best known as the minister of Kidderminster in England, his love for God and others resulted in practically the entire town of Kidderminster turning to Jesus during Baxter’s ministry there. Richard Baxter desired unity among Christians, which often resulted in opposition from those who held to church loyalty or theological views rather than to Christ and God’s Word. Baxter had his share of persecution, even being imprisoned on several occasions. Read more

According to Promise [updated, Annotated]: of Salvation, Life, and Eternity

Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. – 2 Corinthians 7:1 The first part of this book is meant to be a sieve to separate the chaff from the wheat. Use it on your own soul. It may be the most profitable and beneficial work you have ever done. He who looked into his accounts and found that his business was losing money was saved from bankruptcy. This may happen also to you. If, however, you discover that your heavenly business is prospering, it will be a great comfort to you. You cannot lose by honestly searching your own heart. The second part of this book examines God’s promises to His children. The promises of God not only exceed all precedent, but they also exceed all imitation. No one has been able to compete with God in the language of liberality. The promises of God are as much above all other promises as the heavens are above the earth. About the AuthorCharles Haddon (C. H.) Spurgeon (1834-1892) was a British Baptist preacher. He started preaching at age 16 and quickly became famous. He is still known as the “Prince of Preachers” and frequently had more than 10,000 people present to hear him preach at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. His sermons were printed in newspapers, translated into many languages, and published in many books. Read more
