Preparing for a Meditation Retreat: a 10-day Vipassana Meditation Retreat Primer
Meditation retreats have become increasingly popular in recent years. While considerable effort is put forth by the organizers of these retreats, oftentimes meditators have not adequately prepared, nor do they have a plan for how to best benefit from their experiences afterwards. While the teachers often are incredibly experienced, they may not empathize with the specific trials of modern urban life – its chaos and neuroses abound. If you are someone who’s grown up in such a world, learning about the journey through the first ten-day meditation retreat that changed my life can be helpful. This book is the first in a series written to appeal to those interested in the benefits, with full disclosure on my mistakes, what I wish I knew, and an in-depth look at why it was the most life-changing event I’ve been fortunate enough to experience. While this series may be applicable to many forms of meditation retreats, it is catered specifically to Vipassana meditation, as taught by S.N. Goenka. This is the meditation technique said to have been practiced by Gotama the Buddha, liberating him from suffering and allowing him to achieve enlightenment. I spent ten days in the California desert learning the practice of Vipassana – a technique to see things as they really are, not as they appear to be. Read more$0.00$0.99 -
Preparations for Sufferings: the Best Work in the Worst Times [updated and Annotated]
We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance. – Romans 5:3 It is as much our interest as it is our duty to be awakened out of our pleasant but most pernicious drowsiness. Troubles will be so much more sinking and intolerable if they take us by surprise. Just as expectation spoils earthly comforts by sucking out much of its sweetness beforehand so that we find less in it when we come to the actual enjoyment, so the expectation of suffering eases much of the dread and terror by accustoming our thoughts beforehand and making preparation for them. If prepared, we do not find suffering so grievous, overwhelming, and intolerable when it does come. It is not the design of this book to frighten anyone with imaginary dangers, much less to sow jealousies or stir up discontentment for the times. But, it is lamentable that the tokens of God’s anger produce in most of us no fruit other than bold censures and loud clamors rather than humiliation for our own sins and the due preparation to take up our own cross and follow Christ in His suffering. The only goal of this book is to provide a better understand of the purpose and function of suffering for the sake of Christ. Should we not be of those who sincerely resolve and prepare to be followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises (Hebrews 6:12) and take them for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience (James 5:10)? About the AuthorJohn Flavel (c.1628-1691) was born into an England wracked by political, social, and religious upheaval. Two civil wars and unstable leadership framed the political landscape. Economic hardships and a resurgence of plague further distressed the nation. The church, too, was in turmoil. Flavel, a pastor of one of the many independent churches persecuted by the government, was forced from his church in Dartmouth. In secret and under stress, he continued preaching, writing, and shepherding his flock. He suffered the death of three of his four wives and at least one child. He continued preaching until his sudden death in 1691. Read more$0.00$16.99 -

How to Be Saved and How to Be Lost: the Way of Salvation and the Way of Condemnation Made As Plain As Day [updated and Annotated]
The purpose of this book is to make the way of salvation as plain as day to men, women, and children, with the expectation that many of those who read the book will see the way, will take it, will be saved at once, and will obtain eternal life. The book goes out into the world for the same purpose that Jesus Christ came into it: to seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10 AKJV). Jesus Christ came to save sinners. Do you want Jesus to take an interest in you and save you? Then you must take your place before Him as a sinner – a commonplace, unadorned, unvarnished, inexcusable, self-confessed sinner. Not a respectable sinner; no, not a sophisticated sinner or a cultivated sinner; no, not an attractive sinner or an amiable sinner; no, just a plain, unadorned sinner – a poor, miserable, vile, guilty, worthless, hell-deserving sinner. Did you know that more people are shut out of Jesus Christ’s saving grace, pardon, heaven, and eternal life because they won’t come to Jesus Christ as sinners – plain, ugly, wretched sinners? Far more people are shut out of heaven by the pride that keeps them from crying, God be merciful to me a sinner, than are shut out by the enormity of their sins or by the stubbornness of their infidelity. It is as true today as it was when Jesus Christ first said it to the moralists of His own day: The publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you (Matthew 21:31). Christ Jesus came not merely to save the sinner from the guilt of his sins and from the penalty of his sins, but to save him also from the power of sin. Jesus Christ does save from sin’s guilt and from sin’s punishment; He does save from a guilty conscience and from hell, but thank God, that is not all; He saves from sin’s power. Our Lord’s own words bring this out with great clearness and force. He says in John 8:34 (ASV), Every one that committeth sin is the bondservant [slave] of sin. We all know this is true. How many of us know from bitterest experience the slavery of sin, the slavery of drunkenness, the slavery of lust, the slavery of the greed for gold, the slavery of a bad temper, the slavery of an unruly tongue, the slavery of a mean disposition, or the slavery of unclean thoughts. Yes, we have all known something about the bondage of sin, but listen to what Jesus Christ: If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed (John 8:36 ASV). Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Savior who died on Calvary’s cross to make pardon possible, rose from the dead and is a living Savior today. He has all power . . . in heaven and in earth (Matthew 28:18 AKJV), and is therefore able to save to the uttermost, not merely from the uttermost but also to the uttermost, all those who come to God through Him (Hebrews 7:25); He saves us from all the slavery of sin. He saves us from sin’s power as well as from sin’s guilt. That is what He came to do; that is what He does do.– Reuben A. Torrey About the AuthorReuben Archer Torrey traveled all over the world leading evangelistic tours, preaching to the unsaved. It is believed that more than one hundred thousand were saved under his preaching. Torrey married Clara Smith in 1879, with whom he had five children. In 1908, he helped start the Montrose Bible Conference in Pennsylvania, which continues today. He became dean of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (now Biola University) in 1912, and was the pastor of the Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles from 1915 to 1924. Torrey continued speaking all over the world and holding Bible conferences. He died in Asheville, North Carolina, on October 26, 1928. Read more$0.00$0.99 -
Why I Believe the Bible: Reasonable Affirmation That Everything in the Bible Is True [updated and Annotated]
All scripture is given by inspiration of God –2 Timothy 3:16 The world has been hunting during all these centuries for something better than the Bible and has not yet discovered it. And the thing that has been, will continue to be. Dreamers will still dream on; undevout thinkers will pursue their hopeless quest; kings and potentates will continue their search for a new and better religion as they have done by the light of Smithfield fires and the burning of heretics. But thoughtful and reverent men and women will go on loving their Bibles. The troubled will run for comfort to this shelter as to the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. Sinners will search the Scriptures for a clear hope of salvation and find it under the cross. For there is no weapon in the arsenal of unbelief that can prevail against the “Yea” and “Amen” of the living God. List of Chapters The Antecedent Presumption The Claim: Is It Verified? Communities of Saint Martin: Legend and Ritual in Medieval Tours
Sharon Farmer here investigates the ways in which three medieval communities—the town of Tours, the basilica of Saint-Martin there, and the abbey of Marmoutier nearby—all defined themselves through the cult of Saint Martin. She demonstrates how in the early Middle Ages the bishops of Tours used the cult of Martin, their fourthcentury predecessor, to shape an idealized image of Tours as Martin’s town. As the heirs to Martin’s see, the bishops projected themselves as the rightful leaders of the community. However, in the late eleventh century, she shows, the canons of Saint-Martin (where the saint’s relics resided) and the monks of Marmoutier (which Martin had founded) took control of the cult and produced new legends and rituals to strengthen their corporate interests. Since the basilica and the abbey differed in their spiritualities, structures, and external ties, the canons and monks elaborated and manipulated Martin’s cult in quite different ways. Farmer shows how one saint’s cult lent itself to these varying uses, and analyzes the strikingly dissimilar Martins that emerged. Her skillful inquiry into the relationship between group identity and cultural expression illuminates the degree to which culture is contested territory. Farmer’s rich blend of social history and hagiography will appeal to a wide range of medievalists, cultural anthropologists, religious historians, and urban historians. Read more$0.00$16.95 -
